Searching, browsing and filters

Searching and filters:

1. The main homepage offers a general search. All content types will be returned in your Search, including Earlycite content.

2. You can start a new search on any page using the magnifying glass on the top right. If you are already on an existing content item this will default to search within the publication you are in (i.e. if you are on a journal article from the British Food Journal, your search will automatically be set within that publication) for a more refined search within that title or product. However, if you wish to search within our entire portfolio you can select on the drop-down.

3. Having conducted a search, you can filter content using the options on the left-hand menu including filtering to specific formats such as:

· Entire books and journals

· Smaller format content such as review articles, research articles, chapters

· Date range

· Subject area.

4. You can also apply an availability filter as follows:

· Available – This content is available for the user to access, either via an institutional subscription or through individual purchase (i.e. via Pay Per View or Research Pass). This will only function when authenticated, otherwise use 'Free" or "Open Access"

· Open Access – This is content that is published as open access via a hybrid, gold or diamond journal, or as open access book content.

· Free – paywalled content that has been temporarily put in front of the paywall, usually for promotional or marketing purposes for a set period of time.

· Available to purchase – this refers to content that is not currently available to access, open access or free, but is available for purchase either via an institutional subscription, token pack or Pay Per View.

5. Advanced search delivers the opportunity to search for exact phases, find a particular author, or look for a particular piece of content via DOI.

Boolean Search

Boolean search terms are usable in the main search bar on any page on Emerald Insight.

Use Quotation Marks for Exact Matches

Placing quotation marks around your search term can significantly narrow down your results by searching for the exact phrase.

  • Example:
Searching for Blue-Green Cities: Integrating urban flood risk management with green infrastructure returns 959 results.
Searching for "Blue-Green Cities: Integrating urban flood risk management with green infrastructure" (with quotes) returns just 93 results, all of which are more targeted.

This method is especially helpful when you're looking for specific titles or phrases.
