CASA (Campus Activated Subscriber Access) is an authentication enhancement that improves the authentication for off-campus users of Google Scholar. CASA is free and is automatically enabled for all Emerald customers that participate in Google Scholar.
How does it work?
When a user is on-campus, and they connect to a University network using the university's IP, permission is granted to access the university's subscriptions. If they visit Google Scholar whilst on campus (IP authentication) or via a proxy server (off campus), Google automatically creates an affiliation between that user and their institution. The resulting cookie will permit access in the same way when the user is no longer able to access via IP or proxy. With Google CASA, this same seamless authentication follows the user when they take their device to any off-campus location. Once the affiliation is created, it is valid for 30 days and grants immediate access to Emerald Insight without needing to log in.
Note that off campus users, who are coming from an unknown IP address range, will need to self-select their library within Google Scholar. Users can self-select by performing the following steps.
- Go to https://scholar.google.com/
- Click on “Settings”
- Click on “Library Links”
- Search for the name of your library
- Select the checkbox next to the name of the appropriate library, then choose “save”
- Please note access to the full text will only be granted if an existing cookie is still valid for use, or the user is able to sign in to the full-text using off-campus authentication such as proxy access or Shibboleth/OpenAthens.

Library Links are article-level links to subscription full text for patrons affiliated with a library. When a user searches Google Scholar and an Emerald result is found, then a link to Emerald Full-text will appear. Library links are especially useful for remote users who are not accessing Google Scholar from within the library. Please see Google Scholar’s Library Support pages for more information.
