For referring URL access to function correctly, the referrer policy must pass the full URL information to Emerald so that we know they are authenticate users from the referring site.

The 2020 update in Chromium based browsers (such as Chrome and Edge) and Firefox, resulted in a new default referrer policy being applied to referring URL access and the default policy in this update (‘strict-origin-when-cross-origin’) can block access from working by default, restricting the information we receive for authentication.

Action required:

The suggested referrer policy to maintain access is the previous default ‘no-referrer-when-downgrade’. This enables referring URL information to be passed in full to secure sites only.

The easiest way to add this referrer policy, without affecting further links or your wider site, is direct to the link to Emerald within the HTML. This can be seen in example below

The suggested code placed after the link seen here is referrerpolicy=”no-referrer-when-downgrade”

Further information can be found in the Google update regarding the options for the setting of referrer policies on for your site including:

Different policies can be set for different pages so you will not be required to make the change site-wide and only on the page referring URL access links are hosted.
